As a kid, I discovered my passion for well made and beautifully finished goods. In my home it was my father who had great taste and loved to shop. Each week, on his day off, the two of us would explore every fine store Detroit had to offer. Those shopping trips sparked my interest and appreciation for fine goods. It was the 1950's and nearly everything we loved was manufactured here in the United States.
That was 60 years ago, and since then I have watched as most of our manufacturing has moved overseas, our local mills have closed and the quality of goods and services have suffered. Today, my goal is to seek out the best American made goods with the integrity of the past and to present them in a shopping environment you can't wait to come back to.
I know you will fall in love with not only our USA made concept but with the beauty of the goods, the hand of the textile, the attention to detail, the quality of the stitching, and the commitment these conscientious artisans put into their craft.
Experience in the biz....
College years were spent working in better specialty shops forming the dream of becoming a "Gant" shirt salesman. Dreams do come true and life could not have been more perfect. Traveling the Midwest, calling on the finest shops and department stores, Lou's dream formed into a career.
The year was 1975 and with a desire to settle his young family, Charlevoix "The Beautiful" became home to his first store. Pare his natural buying skills with detailed store interiors and interesting displays; he was able to introduce his customer to a distinct Mettler's style and unprecedented shopping experience. The anticipation of shopping a Mettlers store in Michigan became a "must" for every visitor.
Next stop, Sarasota, Florida and various warm winter locations soon followed. It was then that Lou's talents became noticed by Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, and Joseph Abboud and soon those licensed stores rounded out his portfolio.
During the late 1990's Lou was a partner in Tommy Bahama and was pivotal in launching the brand.
Today, after consulting and traveling the world, his commitment to a great retail experience reins. This time, Northern Michigan and the web are home to his latest concept store featuring the best our American manufacturers have to offer.
Why northern Michigan?
Many people will ask me "why northern Michigan? Why invest in a great looking store when foot traffic is only 6 months a year?" All I can say is when you come for a visit you will understand.
In 1975, the Charlevoix and Bay Harbor area became home to Mettlers. The landscape's natural, four season beauty surrounded by deep, navigable fresh waters makes Charlevoix & Bay Harbor a destination for water lovers; while rolling hills and snowy winters makes it a great place for skiers.
Our customers, from all over the world and all walks of life, end up coming back to our community each year, and like most of us, never want to leave.
